The Chief Miller Nawakayas Memorial Health Complex is committed to ensuring that health services and programs are available to meet the community’s needs. Public health focuses on prenatal health, sexually transmitted infections, health promotion, disease and injury prevention, health protection, health surveillance, population health assessment, and emergency preparedness and response.

Red Earth Cree Nation public health nurses complete these functions through programming in immunization, communicable disease, maternal child health, school health, and the chronic disease program.

Where do we want to be?

Goal: Ensure quality health services and programs are available to meet the needs of the community

Actions:

• Create programs that focus on prevention of health-related issues such as cancer, heart diseases, diabetes, etc.
• Promote physical activity and wellness through events and programming
• Provide special needs members with accessibility and mobility equipment
• Support members in building their self-awareness, self-esteem, and self-accountability through empowerment workshops
• Ensure the Head Start Program and Day Care are sufficiently funded and continue to have qualified employees

Goal: Create a safe and healthy community

Actions:

• Develop a crisis shelter for youth, women and men
• Provide continuous NNDAP programs to address addictions
• Address abuse and mental health issues by raising awareness of physical, mental, emotional, and psychological abuse
• Provide workshops to increase awareness on effects of bullying, harassment, suicide, grief and loss

Communicable diseases, including immunizations, are mandatory programs.

One of the goals of our immunization program is to achieve rates over 95%. Once this rate is achieved, we will have herd immunity, which means that enough people have been immunized to prevent the bacteria or viruses from being able to spread.
